The 10-year hit 5.04% Tuesday, highest since 2007, and your index fund split in half. Energy and banks up, mega-cap growth down — both inside your account, on the same session.

Chevron gained 2.53% Tuesday. Oracle fell 3.1%. Same session, same index. The 10-year Treasury touched 5.04%, the highest level since 2007. Chevron just raised its dividend for the 39th consecutive year. Hike odds sit at 92% into a 2:00 decision your portfolio already priced.

The 10-year Treasury touched 5.04% — highest since 2007 — and the index split down the middle. Energy and banks up. Mega-cap growth down.
And you hold both halves in the same fund, which means your diversification did nothing for you on Tuesday except cancel itself out.
The Fed decides at 2:00 today. Your split decided itself yesterday.

| • | **3M (NYSE: MMM)** +1.75% |

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
But the index fell 0.4% and told you almost nothing. Underneath it, one group of companies gained ground and another gave it up, and the dividing line wasn't sector or size — it was when each business hands you cash.
Oil, banks, industrials pay now. Mega-cap growth pays later.
Different clocks.
[Russell 2000 is down 0.76% again this morning while the S&P is up](https://www.thestreet.com/stock-market-today/stock-market-today-dow-jones-sp-500-nasdaq-updates-sept-16-2026?ref=alpha-token-radar.ghost.io) — small caps carry floating-rate debt, and a 19-year high on the long end lands on them before it reaches you.
And later just got more expensive to wait for.

Chevron just raised its dividend for the [39th consecutive year](https://www.fool.com/investing/stock-market/types-of-stocks/dividend-stocks/high-yield-dividend-stocks/?ref=alpha-token-radar.ghost.io).
Thirty-nine years. Through 2008, through negative oil in 2020, through every rate cycle in between. It yields roughly 3.3%, and management guides free cash flow to grow more than 10% a year through 2030 at $70 crude. Brent touched $105 last week, which you already knew from the pump.
JPMorgan pays $6.00 a share, about 1.7%. Lower headline, different mechanism: a bank earns more on the spread when the long end rises, so the same yield move that punished growth stocks on Tuesday landed in its favor.
But neither of these is cheap because nobody noticed. They're bid because the alternative changed.
If you're drawing income, these are the names your fund is quietly overweighting for you.

Alphabet, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Oracle all fell Tuesday, and none of them reported anything. Nothing changed inside those businesses. The discount did.
A dollar of profit arriving in 2031 is worth less when the risk-free alternative pays 5.04% than when it paid 4%, and that arithmetic hits the companies furthest from their cash the hardest. Oracle is the extreme case — a $664 billion order book and negative free cash flow for five straight quarters.
But chips fell 5% on Monday too, on worries about the pace of AI development rather than about rates.

And the bull case survives both. Lower prices on businesses that compound is what you spend a decade waiting for if you're Band 1\. It just doesn't feel like an opportunity while it's happening to your account.

And the Fed speaks at 2:00\. It won't settle which half is right. Not today.

Two dates. Lennar reports tonight at 4:45 ET, two hours and forty-five minutes after the Fed speaks — the cleanest read available on what 6.76% mortgages did to buyers like your neighbors. Housing starts follow Thursday morning.
But the risk running against everything above: oil retreated this morning. A Saudi pipeline restart or a Hormuz agreement pulls crude off $105, energy gives back Tuesday's gain, and the whole rotation reverses inside a week.
