Gasoline rose 9.1% in September. More than half of the entire increase in consumer prices came from that one line.
And the energy sector is up about 38% this year, the best of the eleven.
Same number, opposite signs. What costs you at the pump pays somebody’s dividend.
The question for you is whether that’s a hedge or a trap.

Six sectors are up single digits this year. Energy, 38%.
But that gap isn’t a stock-picking story. It’s one commodity doing the work, and the same barrel that lifted those shares is the reason your grocery delivery and your tank cost more than they did in August.
Your cost of living and your best-performing sector share a cause.

Crude is the input. Gasoline is the output. The gap between them is where the money sits.
Simple enough.
When a tanker route closes or a field goes offline, crude rises — and refined fuel rises faster, because the shortage is in the finished product. That spread widened all year as the Hormuz disruption, the Libyan blockade and shut-in Gulf production took barrels out at once.
The pump price you paid in September is last quarter’s refining margin, delivered to you a few weeks later.
And the energy sector is expected to post the highest earnings growth of any sector this quarter.
Which is the hedge argument in one sentence. Owning energy means the thing raising your costs is also raising your holdings.
But a hedge that only pays while you’re being hurt is a strange kind of comfort.

The Sector Isn’t One Trade

Inside that 38%, the spread is wider than you’d guess.
[Refining and marketing is up about 138% this year](https://finance.yahoo.com/sectors/energy/?ref=alpha-token-radar.ghost.io). Oil and gas drilling, 68%. Integrated majors, 44%. Exploration and production, 38%.
And then the other end. Midstream — the pipelines and storage, the part people buy for income — is up 15.5%. Uranium is down 15%. Thermal coal is down 11%.
Hold those together. 138%, 15.5%, minus 15%, all inside the same sector fund.
But refiners won because the shortage was in finished fuel rather than in crude itself, which is a margin story rather than a price story — and margin stories end faster than price stories do.
For Band 3 holders who bought midstream for the yield, this year’s energy rally mostly happened somewhere else, and your statement shows it.

The EIA projects Brent at $79 by 2027\. Another forecast says $65\. A refining margin up 138% doesn’t repeat. It normalizes. The question is when.
For Band 2 holders, energy is the rare position that pays when your other costs rise — which makes it a hedge rather than a bet, provided it’s sized like one.
Your pump bill is the position you already hold.

October CPI lands November 10, and whether gasoline keeps carrying it decides how much of this holds. The Fed decides October 27 and 28, with hike odds now at 44% after yesterday’s print.
